Cookies

A cookie is a small piece of data a site asks your browser to store and hand back on later visits. It is how most sites recognise a returning visitor, keep a session open, or attribute a visit to a campaign. Local storage does a similar job with a different mechanism.

On an ordinary visit, nothing. No cookie, no local storage entry, no session storage entry and no other persistent identifier. This site loads Google Analytics 4 to count visits, but a Consent Mode v2 default runs ahead of it and denies every storage signal — for every visitor, in every country, with no regional exception, and there is no banner here that could grant one. In that state the measurement tag sets no cookie and stores no identifier on your device.

There is no account system, no form and no advertising, so there is nothing else for a cookie to do here. The one thing this site can write is described below, under Excluding our own visits, and an ordinary visit never triggers it.

One exception, named here rather than passed over in silence: on every page view the measurement code checks whether the gr_int flag is present in your browser. That is our own exclusion for internal visits, so that our test traffic does not end up in the figures. It is written only when a page is opened with ?internal=1 appended — as a cookie with a lifetime of one year, and additionally in local storage. Without that, nothing is written, and nothing on this site links to it. It holds a single flag and nothing about you. You delete it by clearing this site’s data in your browser.

The figures you set in a calculator on this site live in the page while you are looking at it and are gone when you close the tab. They are not saved to your device and not sent anywhere — a reload starts you back at the defaults, which is the honest cost of storing nothing.

None. There is one third party: a page load requests the Google Analytics script from Google, which processes your IP address in serving it. Under the default-denied configuration above that script sets no cookie and stores no identifier. Beyond it no font, image, video embed or stylesheet is loaded from another domain, so no other company is in a position to set a cookie through this site.

Links out to official services take you to somebody else’s site, which has its own cookie practices and its own notice about them.

A consent banner exists to obtain agreement to storing or reading information on your device. On an ordinary visit this site stores nothing about you, so there is nothing to obtain agreement for, and a banner would be a piece of theatre that made the site slower and harder to read. A read does take place on every page view — the internal-visit flag described above — and it is named rather than passed over: it is a single switch, not an identifier, and it exists in a browser only if the reader put it there.

If the position ever changes, the banner appears in the same edit as the thing it is about — not afterwards.
